Oil Paintings

Oil Painting and I go way back.  In college I learned a technique that blends oil paints so carefully it's frequently mistaken for airbrush.  I love the soft blending and the way colors merge into one another.  (In fact, when I was a little girl, I remember watching the Easter egg dyes being poured down our white porcelain sink, merging together, after we dyed our eggs, and that's when I knew I'd want to paint when I grew up!)   So I absolutely love playing with paint, and the nice thing about Oil is that it dries so slowly you can get it just the way you want it.  I've used an "ala primera" method that just uses one layer of paint on the canvas, thus assuring clarity of color.  I enjoy enlarging images to fill and overflow the canvas borders so one cannot deny the unmistakable presence of nature, much as Georgia O'Keefe did with watercolor.

One of the great things about Art and artists is the never-ending growth and learning that takes place.   So, for the past several years I have also been painting in a new, variety of ways.   Using glazes, textures, and more 'painterly' effects has been a lot of fun to incorporate into my work.  Experimenting and pushing myself in new directions keeps Art, like Life, constantly expanding and Joyful!

Shower Trees in Hawaii are known most of all for the vast Abundance of beautiful shimmering petals that absolutely cover it. It always reminds me of the abundance of blessings that are ours in life.

The feeling I wanted to portray in my Shower Tree series was that of laying on the soft grass in the summer, looking up at the branches and feeling totally overwhelmed by shimmery petals everywhere. The feeling is simply Glorious! And as this painting is 4 feet by 4 feet, one can actually feel overwhelmed.

Commissioned by an army captain who was leaving Hawaii, she wanted her favorite flower in a chaotic profusion of colors. While stationed here she had been my art student, and knew we could create something that would bring her joy for the rest of her life.

This dramatic view of Hawaii's state flower, with it's unusual side view and protruding stamen, make a wonderful statement of a bold presence.

John Hinricks wanted this scene of Mangos up close with the beach in the background. After much creative cooperation, we came up with this 3 by 5 foot oil painting he was delighted with.

Influenced by my hero Maxfield Parish, I wanted to create that same other-worldly serene sense of joy and peace. My daughter Kasha poses against an ancient column, gazing up to the birds in the banana tree, while waterfalls in the distance become a water-lily pond. This scene radiates tranquility as we see our young lady has at last come to terms with her world in true Acceptance of whatever Life has to offer.

One of the most spectacular trees in Hawaii is the shimmering Shower Tree, so named for it's profusion of petals which fall to earth in a soft shower of color. This close-up of a golden yellow tree radiates light and warmth, brightening up any corner as does this remarkable tree itself.

The splendor of an opening waterlily calmly radiates here in complimentary colors of purple and golden yellow. Quietly spreading it's petals for the day, feeling the warmth of the day's sunshine - such a thing of beauty.

As a mother, we all want to protect our children from harm. And unfortunately we can't always be there to do so! The sky, orchid sprig, and bird all symbolize a Higher Power that's in charge.

When I planted this Ap'e in my front yard, I had no idea what I was getting into. The leaves grew to over 30 inches long - I thought it was going to take over! And then this interesting blossom appeared....

For some strange reason I chose this painting as the first one ever to do in oil paint. My college professor said it's way too advanced, but I loved the complexity and also the simplicity. And I still do!

The purity and total elegance of this single orchid radiates regal splendor. Painting something that is white is always a challenge, plus all those curly edges was just really fun to tackle.

Bright bold complimentary colors enhance the already spectacular beauty of this Hibiscus flower. This Hawaii state flower comes in many varieties, and each is more outrageous than the other.
