Murals

Murals have been around ever since mankind was first living in caves.  Early civilizations like Pompeii and the Egyptians understood the longevity of wall paintings, while the Renaissance period took wall paintings (and ceilings!) to spectacular new heights. (no pun intended!)  When entire walls and fences are used as canvas, the possibilities for creativity are limitless.  Interior or exterior, the ability of paint to create illusions, and to use that ability to purposely trick the viewer into believing the environment exists as the artist masterfully deceives us, is the whole function of "Trompe l'oeil".  And what fun it can be!

Trompe L'oeil wall murals have the advantage of scenes unbound by heavy frames, creating the illusion of space as far as the eye can see.  Yes, you can finally have that stunning ocean view you've always wanted.  Bring the outdoors in, with no fuss at all.

A classic mural adds value to a home by giving it that unique unforgettable feature.   Soothing vistas bring delight to hospsitals, offices, hotel lobbies or retirement communities.  A bold design dramatically carries out a theme in a store or restaurant.  And the ultimate xeriscape - gardens that Never need watering!  Whether your head is sin the clouds or your feet firmly planted  on the ground, let your environment reflect your Heaven on Earth.   The sky is literally the limit!!

Welcome to this fun world of creativity and Joy ~

                     A Mural makes the Mood!

This 20-foot mural depicts an archway into a magical paradise of mountains, waterfalls, ponds and palms. Geese fly overhead and swans glide in the water. Down the alley from Assagios in Kailua, this mural is meant to uplift the viewers as they park their cars and begin their day's work.

This lone banana tree, life-size from floor to ceiling, makes a quiet corner come alive in a profusion of jutting banana leaves. The look of one solitary tree or bush is simple in it's elegance, yet makes a bold statement. Plus this home has numerous real banana trees growing right outside the sliding glass doors, giving the viewer a delightful game of "is this one Real"??

Aloha Tower Marketplace was the scene for this fun bar and restaurant with the 20-foot mural commissioned by the Souza Tequilla company (can you tell?!) Cowgirls in bikinis and boots, perched on a tequilla bottle or in a margarita glass, create a lively atmosphere for the thirsty 'paniolos' who come here. A thoroughly male chauvinist mural indeed!

This wall had a buttress down the middle making it difficult to hang pictures on it. The perfect solution was to paint directly onto the wall, camoflaging the irregularity. The owner wanted simplicity with tall tropical flowers, plus her favorite tree is plumeria. Thinking ahead to new owners of the condo, we extended the plants behind the sofa to go with any arrangement of furniture. A truly lovely ladylike look.

Bring the outdoors in with this perfect solution to an enclosed space. Much simpler than building a new window, just let the paint create reality. This archway opens out to a lovely ocean view, with the owner's treasures proudly displayed atop the ledge.

At the end of a long hall surrounded by bedrooms and visable from the front doorway, this mural is a perfect example of the illusion of art. What used to be a dull blank wall now leads the eye toward infinity. Sun streaming behind majestic mountains, waterfalls cascading into pools of clear water, palms sway in the wind and ferns frame the view. This mural takes a small obscure space and makes it Magical!

Swimming happily among the coral and fishes, this mother and child dolphin duo glide gracefully over a sunken bathtub in Kahala. Inspired by the coral and fish inlaid tiles interspersed about, this cheery mural ties the look together as it provides company for a relaxing retreat. Sealed with a varathane sealer, it's even tough enough to withstand any amount of splashing.

What would a surfer mural be without a surfer? This whole mural was based on old Hawaiiana Vintage posters.

This lovely mural really takes you away from the little Kailua deli whose wall it's painted on. Even the tile floor is painted, with faux railings overlooking the famous Mokulua islands. The Banana Tree and Bird of Paradise in pots help creat the 3-dimensional effect to fool the eye.

Sitting on the ledge of this 20-foot "archway" sits a young girl with her cat, smiling welcome toward the oncoming cars. Even the cat looks like something just caught his attention. Painted lifesize, yes this is my favorite model, my beautiful daughter, Kasha!

This ipu on the window ledge, with lei hanging over, helps create the 3-dimensional effect that's so fun when 'fooling the eye' with murals

When the new baby was due to arrive, the parents brought their love of Bali into the nursery. Rising up from a horizontal bamboo painted at the crib line, haleconia and a banana tree surround a Balinese hut. A playful monkey swings overhead while a mother duck with her ducklings waddles by.
tn_Nana_Tree.jpg
Sitting at the top of a staircase, this otherwise dull bare wall becomes a fun tropical banana tree, tying in with the others that surround this lovely house in Lanikai. What fun to bound up the stairs only to remember you are indeed in Paradise!

This detail shows how believable one-point perspective gives the illusion of 3-dimensional reality. To make the archway apear to turn in along the bottom, I had to spackle the baseboard where it turned into threshold, adding the orchid plant to further fool the viewer. The illusion of the archway was so good even the home-owner bumped into the wall with her vacume occasionally!

A dark and dull corner becomes a lovely and lively Garden, mirroring the theme of the goldfish pond and, egrets, and beautiful tropical foliage.

Each of the seven 'angels' hovering about have the face of one of Victoria's grandchildren... while the 'big angel' is the face of Victoria herself.

Victoria has a collection of over a thousand angels in her home, so it was only appropriate to be welcomed in by an Angel Mural.

This exact replica of Kailua Beach had particularly fond memories for this family. And what better way to bring it home while visually enlarging their back yard space at the same time. The cement ground was painted sand color on purpose, and you can almost hear the waves lapping onto shore where an outrigger canoe has been casually left waiting.

This fun mural stretches clear across the 64 feet of this backyard, creating a glorious profusion of jungle animals and action going on. A bear watches for salmon in the pond, swans glide by, a rabbit hides from a lion, elephants, monkeys... so much going on! Arica palms are painted to blend with the neighbors plants beyond, as well as the overhanging hibiscus. This backyard is transformed a fabulous place to lively social activities now!

tn_zz_giraffe1.jpg
Part of the fun of this 64-foot mural was to have the family's youngest member included sitting atop a girraffe. The home-owner wanted the kids to play 'pin the tail on the giraffe' when he turned two, and that's exactly what they did!
tn_zz_lion_detail2.jpg
The detail from this 64-foot mural shows the animals at home in their jungle. The lion looks intently outward while his cub climbs an arica palm overhead chasing a butterfly. A playful monkey swings overhead adding movement and charm.
tn_zzzz12.jpg
Graceful egrets flying over this gentleman's sofa give life and motion to an otherwise static rom. Adding interest an orchid plant peeks up from behind the couch, blending colors with various throw pillows strewn about. A wonderful way to truly "lift the spirits and soar"!

This couple finally got the ocean view they'd always dreamed of, compelte with railings and patio tiles that match what exists around their home. And that's the homeowner's favorite beach chair way down there on the sand.
